c. 1638–1676

Massachusetts connection
Pokanoket Wampanoag homelands; southeastern Massachusetts
Metacom was Ousamequin’s son and a Wampanoag leader. English colonists called him King Philip. As English settlements grew and Native control of land weakened, he resisted colonial power. The war named for him brought terrible losses. Wampanoag communities survived and continue today.
